Shopify product image size and limits
5000 px, 25 megapixels, under 20 MB, and a 2048 px square as the display sweet spot. What Shopify publishes, and what it leaves to your theme.

| Maximum file size | Under 20 MB | Required |
| Best size for square images | 2048 × 2048 px | Recommended |

Two limits that overlap
Shopify states a 5000 × 5000 px ceiling and a 25 megapixel ceiling. For a square image these are the same number: 5000 × 5000 is exactly 25 MP. They only diverge for non-square media, where a long panorama can hit the megapixel ceiling while staying inside the dimension ceiling.
Because of that overlap, the Shopify preset reports both rules but evaluates them against the same bound rather than pretending to measure two independent things.
Why aspect ratio matters more than size
Shopify notes that product images appear side by side on collection pages and look inconsistent when their ratios differ. Themes can request consistent sizing from the Shopify CDN, but the underlying crop is still yours to control.
This is the single strongest argument for batch processing: pick one ratio, apply it to every image in the set, and the grid lines up. Doing it image by image by hand is where inconsistency creeps in.
PNG, JPEG or WebP
Shopify calls PNG the best file type for most product images and lists JPEG next, with TIFF, BMP, GIF, SVG, HEIC and WebP also accepted. The trade-off is size: a 2048 px photographic PNG can be 4–8 MB while the same image as WebP is a few hundred kilobytes. Both are inside the 20 MB limit, so it is a page-speed decision rather than a compliance one.
Shopify’s CDN re-encodes for delivery anyway, so the master file mainly needs to be large enough and clean. WebP at quality 85 is the preset default here; switch to PNG in the Convert tab for flat graphics or logos.
Questions
What is the maximum image size for Shopify?
Shopify product and collection images can be up to 5000 × 5000 pixels or 25 megapixels, and must be smaller than 20 MB.
What size should Shopify product images be?
Shopify says 2048 × 2048 px usually displays best for square product images. It is a recommendation for display quality, not a hard requirement.
Does Shopify accept WebP?
Yes. Shopify lists WebP among accepted product media types, alongside PNG, JPEG, TIFF, BMP, GIF, SVG and HEIC.
Why do my collection images look different sizes?
Different aspect ratios. Themes place featured images side by side and each keeps its own shape. Crop every image to the same ratio before uploading.
Does Shopify compress my images?
Yes. Shopify’s imagery service generates multiple sizes and serves the best supported format for each visitor. Upload a clean, correctly sized master and let the CDN handle delivery.
Is PNG or JPEG better for Shopify?
Shopify says PNG is the best file type for most product images, followed by JPEG. For photographs, a 2048 px PNG is often several megabytes while WebP or JPEG is a few hundred kilobytes — worth weighing against the size limit.
