Transparency is the trap

A cut-out product on a transparent background looks perfect in Photoshop and terrible on Etsy: transparent pixels render as black. Etsy states plainly that transparent PNGs are not supported. The fix is to flatten the image onto a solid colour before upload, and to do it deliberately rather than letting the encoder pick black.

The Etsy preset detects images with an alpha channel on upload, flags them, and flattens onto #FFFFFF during export.

The 1 MB warning is not a limit

Etsy says images larger than 1 MB may not finish uploading, especially on slower connections — and links to upload troubleshooting. It is a risk threshold, not a hard rejection. Practically: 2000 px at quality 90 lands around 300–600 KB, so a well-made listing image is nowhere near it. If a file does exceed 1 MB, lower the quality slider to 80% before uploading.

Square or landscape, settled

Etsy’s guidance says the first photo should be landscape or square, that all photos in a listing should share a shape, and that square crops should be avoided because the thumbnail slots are wide. That last point is why some sellers shoot 4:3 and let Etsy crop for the grid.

The toolkit defaults to 2000 × 2000 because a square master is reusable on Amazon and Shopify. If Etsy is your only channel, switch the crop ratio to 4:3 and use 3000 × 2250 — still above the 2000 px recommendation, in the shape Etsy points at.

Questions

What is the best image size for Etsy listings?

Etsy recommends at least 2000 pixels on both the width and the height for listing photos. The first photo in particular should clear 635 px in each direction to avoid lower placement in search.

Does Etsy support PNG with transparency?

No. Etsy says transparent PNGs are not supported and that transparent areas will appear black. Flatten the image onto a solid colour before uploading — white is the usual choice for product cut-outs.

What file types can I upload to Etsy?

JPG, GIF, PNG, SVG and HEIC. WebP is not on the list, which is why the Etsy preset in this toolkit exports JPEG.

Why do my Etsy uploads fail or stall?

Etsy warns that images larger than 1 MB may not finish uploading, particularly on slow connections. A 2000 px JPEG at quality 90 is usually well under that.

Should Etsy listing photos be square or landscape?

Etsy recommends the first photo be landscape or square, and advises against square crops because its thumbnail slots are wide. In practice many sellers keep a square master and accept the grid crop.

Do I need an unedited photo?

Yes. Etsy requires at least one unedited photo of the actual item against a real background. You can edit other photos, but you cannot edit away flaws or misrepresent what the buyer receives.
